Free Measles vaccines for all : BNP Health sec Urologoist Dr Md Rafiqul Islam

Measles outbreak situation inspected at Rajshahi Medical College, urges prompt vaccine supply

In the context of the ongoing measles outbreak in the country, BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam visited various departments of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. During the visit, he exchanged views with the hospital authorities, doctors at various levels and officials to deal with the emerging situation.

Later, he told the journalists present that the first measles (measles) patient in the country was identified in the Rohingya camp on January 4. He said, “Bangladesh received free vaccines until 2024. However, during the interim government, there was a disruption in the supply of vaccines due to procurement complications. This may have caused the current outbreak.”

He also mentioned that during the interim government, vaccination activities were also disrupted due to the movement of health assistants and vaccine porters for various demands. He urged those concerned to be more vigilant so that the common people do not suffer in such situations in the future.

Dr. Rafiqul Islam said, “The government should quickly collect the necessary vaccines and distribute them among the people.” He said that measles vaccination is usually given at the age of 9 months and 15 months. However, in the recent outbreak, children under 9 months are also being infected, which is worrying. He emphasized the need to find out the specific cause through research in this regard.

During the visit, he expressed satisfaction with the limited capacity of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, keeping 12 children in the ICU and providing medical services to other measles patients admitted to the ward. He thanked the doctors, officials and employees concerned for this.

At this time, he urged the people not to panic and take necessary precautions.

Rajshahi Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General Masud ul Islam, College Vice-Principal Professor Zahurul Haque, along with doctors, officials and employees from various departments of the hospital were present during the visit.
