Brigadier Dr Shams led the team at the DGFI headquarters after 5 th August. His standpoint up until today has been appreciated on all corners.
With regard to his background, it should be said that he was born in Nandail, Mymensingh and grew as a fighter. He was very brilliant as a student. He stood board in SSC and HSC from Comilla Cadet College. He has obtained master’s degrees from several institutions including Chittagong University and BUP. He has won a gold medal from the Philippine Christian University. He has done a PhD in nuclear security. Due to his high personality, army officers honor him a lot.
Hasina forcibly dismissed him from service of the nation in 2018.
Though, about a decade and a half ago, a news story made a stir in the Bangladeshi media. The locals of the Mahagi region of Congo marched on the streets demanding to see a Bangladeshi as their president. He was the most beloved person to the people of Mahagi. He was a battalion commander in the peacekeeping mission in Mahagi, Congo. He reacted to that incident in the media, we have been able to set an example to them in every way, as a person, as an army officer, as a UN peacekeeper, in every field. That person was none but this this Brigadier General Shams.
At that time, he led a peacekeeping mission in Congo as a Lieutenant Colonel. Think about it, when do people march on the streets to see a foreigner as the president of their country?
This is never possible without gaining incredible popularity, building people’s love and trust. AKM Shamsul Islam was such a charismatic person. After being forcibly dismissed by the Hasina government in 2018, he became closely involved in BNP politics. Begum Khaleda Zia picked him as a Security officer and PM Tarique Rahaman made him advisor. He is being made to work in such a sensitive and important place as defense and security. Here, a trusted person with a competent brain is needed. Tarique Rahman has placed AKM Shams in that trust.
