BNP delegation holds bilateral meeting with Chinese top leadership


Today, Tuesday, April 21, 2026, a high-level delegation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP, led by BNP Secretary General and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mr. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, met with Vice President of the People’s Republic of China Mr. Han Zheng at the Great Hall of the People, and with Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Mr. Liu Haixing at the IDCPC Building in two separate bilateral meetings.


In the meeting, both sides held constructive discussions on various aspects of the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China and emphasized on further strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Both sides expressed strong optimism that the strengthening of Bangladesh-China bilateral relations, which was initiated by the late President Ziaur Rahman and later developed under the leadership of the late Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, will be elevated to new heights under the leadership of the current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The “Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership” of Bangladesh-China bilateral relations was mentioned as a reflection of the deep trust and multi-dimensional cooperation between the two countries. In addition, both sides agreed to work on signing a Memorandum of Understanding to develop relations between the CPC of China and the BNP, conduct bilateral visits and conduct regular institutional exchanges. The BNP Secretary General said that the current government has formulated Bangladesh’s international and foreign policies by giving top priority to national interests, sovereignty, security and people’s welfare and keeping the “Bangladesh First” policy in mind. In this context, he also reiterated Bangladesh’s strong support for the One-China Policy. In addition, both sides agreed to exchange high-level visits in the future and further strengthen the relationship between the political parties of the two countries.
Regarding the Rohingya crisis, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that China’s continued support is very important in addressing this humanitarian challenge. He emphasized China’s constructive role in ensuring the safe, dignified, sustainable and voluntary repatriation of the Rohingya.
The minister also said that China’s goodwill and partnership in the integrated management of the Teesta River, which is related to the livelihood of the northern part of Bangladesh, is very important. In addition, understanding and economic engagement between the people of the two countries will be further strengthened through increasing Chinese language education and cultural exchanges.
He also expressed his hope to expand cooperation through increasing training capacity and knowledge exchange in the fields of defense and institutional development.
He said that Bangladesh is interested in gaining experience from China’s success in modern urban management, waste management, advanced water purification technology and rural development. He also emphasized China’s role in cooperation in light and medium industries, including renewable energy, green energy, electric vehicles and batteries.
Referring to the proposed Bangladesh-China Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh, he said that China’s continued support is expected in cooperation in robotic surgery and modern medical technology, vaccination programs and the development of the public health system. He also expressed hope that China will establish technical training institutions in Bangladesh and increase training opportunities for government officials and political workers with China’s cooperation.
Both the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China and the Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) referred to Bangladesh as their important neighbor and partner and expressed their determination to deepen relations based on mutual respect, trust and cooperation. They assured to continue cooperation with Bangladesh in various fields and emphasized on joint progress through mutual experience exchange.
Both meetings discussed the overall progress of bilateral relations, the direction of future cooperation and strengthening mutual cooperation in the regional and global context. Both sides expressed their determination to elevate the relations to a higher level on the basis of mutual respect and equality.
Both sides expressed their hope that such high-level communication and dialogue will further consolidate Bangladesh-China relations and open new doors for multi-dimensional cooperation in the future.
