Since 1971, Bangladesh went through a number of significant external policy shifts due to changes in leadership and regimes. Martyred President General Ziaur Rahaman pursued a vivid foreign policy which was later on followed by two reigns of Begum Khaleda Zia in (1991-1995) & (2001-2006). Opportunity has popped up again in 2026 to revitalize the ever present foreign policy theory : “Bangladesh first no matter what”. PM elect Tarique Rahaman has exchanged views with Chinese and the EU Ambassadors in Bangladesh. The foreign minister Dr Khalilur Rahaman has also exchanged views with the US,India, Pakistan, KSA and Chinese Ambassadors. It is imperative to note that the Chinese ambassador has urged Bangladesh to provide details of the Teesta river dam implementation plan which was found to be an undergoing discussion during the interim government. Since the government of BNP strictly adopts Bangladesh first policy, it is expected from all sides that it will measure the best diplomatic gestures from all sides and come to a decision which provides best interests to Bangladesh. During the fascist Hasina regime, the relations focused on only one country and it ultimately failed the foreign policy of Bangladesh. Under the new Bangladesh with July & 1971 spirit, PM elect Tarique Rahaman has demonstrated the highest balanced foreign policy approaches with our partnering nations.
